Our Frog Hotel
Our Frog Hotel is an ongoing sustainability and environmental learning project, thoughtfully created by the children as a way to care for and connect with the natural world around us. Frog hotels provide cool, damp hiding places where frogs can rest, regulate their body temperature, and stay protected from predators — especially important during warmer months or dry periods.
How it started
2nd February 2026
Using recycled materials, natural loose parts and child-led design, the children worked together to build a safe, sheltered space that supports local frogs and small wildlife. We gathered small rocks and larger rocks, placing them carefully around the base of the pipes to hold them in place. We added a plant (with more to come) creating a natural feel, then filled with water.
One child shared, “The frogs are going to love it,” while another wondered, “When are the frogs going to come?” Their conversations reflected curiosity, empathy, and a growing understanding of caring for living things
How it's going
9th February 2026
On our next session here, we went to check on our frog hotel. We noticed that the recent rain had filled the pot with water, and we wondered whether it may have brought tadpoles. We discussed how tadpoles grow and change into frogs, sharing our ideas about life cycles and what might happen next in our special habitat.
Observing the frog hotel over time invites curiosity, patience and problem-solving as children wonder who might visit, why frogs are important, and how humans can live in harmony with nature.
This project reflects our commitment to nature-based, child-led learning — where sustainability isn’t just talked about, but lived, experienced and nurtured through real-world connections.
An update!
16th February 2026
On another visit to our frog hotel, excitingly, we had our first guest! At the bottom of one of the pots we discovered a tiny baby frog hiding. We spoke about how frogs love water and need lots of rain to grow. All the excitement and noise of spotting the frog soon scared it back under a rock. The children began to understand that we need to be quiet and gentle around our frog hotel, as it is the frog’s home.
